From the smallest button cell to the largest electric vehicles, batteries are an integral part of our lives. But we need to remember that these batteries can get damaged, be defective or get recalled. It is important to know how to identify and handle these batteries safety following all the proper precautions.
Identification
Damaged batteries can be inside any electronic device including cell phones, laptops, tablets, power tools and more. Identification is the first step in safely handling damaged batteries. Keep a look out for any of the following, which may be a sign of a damaged battery:
- Noticeably swollen or bloated
- Burn marks
- Cracks, corrosion or leaking from the battery
Recalled Batteries

Storage
A damaged battery should be handled and stored with extreme care. These batteries should not be thrown away as they can potentially leak toxic chemicals into the ground polluting the soil and water sources. They can also a fire hazard and, if thrown away, could cause fires in waste collection facilities or transportation vehicles. If you have a damaged battery, purchase a DDR kit to safety store and ship these batteries.
When storing a damaged battery, we recommend wearing gloves to avoid direct skin contact. Safety store this battery in a container of sand or kitty litter. Keep these batteries away from metal and store in a cool dry place. DO NOT place damaged batteries in the garbage or recycling bin.
Shipping
It is important to know that the U.S Department of Transportation (DOT) has special regulations on the shipping of a damaged battery. These guidelines include special handling, clear labeling, and could include restrictions on the avenue of transportation. By being aware of these guidelines it will make it easier and safer to dispose of damaged batteries.
